Alex Aitken is an A-level examiner, writer, educationalist and former Head of Music, and is the author and creator of Mastering A-level Music.

He now works as a Musical Director and pianist in the West End (most recently as one of the pianists for Andrew Lloyd Webber's revival of Sunset Boulevard at the Savoy Theatre, and as the Children's Musical Director and Cover Conductor on Cameron Mackintosh's production of Mary Poppins), and maintains a slightly-too-busy schedule as a conductor, pianist and teacher around the UK.

Alex Aitken A Level Music Guide

His unique, innovative and holistic teaching approach has consistently yielded outstanding A-level and GCSE results across all components of the specifications and this, alongside his wider educational work and reputation for excellence, has led to being in great demand as a visiting leader of A-level conferences, masterclasses, INSET days, CPD, and departmental reviews in schools around the UK. Alex was also on the review team for Edexcel’s GCSE Music textbook, having written the analysis for Defying Gravity.

A former organ scholar of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where he read Music before completing a PGCE, he has been teaching for 18 years in a variety of schools, as well as privately, and was previously Head of Academic Music and Choirmaster at Stowe School.

He has composed scores to numerous short films, which have premièred at both BAFTA and the London Film Academy, and holds Licentiate diplomas in piano performance from both the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College London, and the Associate diploma in organ performance from the Royal College of Organists.

He hates C major, adores coffee, and is a bit mad, which probably comes across in the website.
